VolunteerStarkville.org

A message from VolunteerStarkville.org:

Starkville is a unique southern town that is proud of its historic traditions, while being progressive in the 21st century. You can call Starkville a college town, a retirement community, and a place to raise your family, which prove how diverse our community is. Within this unique town filled with diverse residents, you will find a large group of people who want to give back to Starkville. Volunteer Starkville wants to not only help those who seek volunteer opportunities, but also find new volunteers throughout our community.

The mission of Volunteer Starkville is to:

•    Fill the gap of knowledge between the organization and the volunteer

•    Connect area non-profits/organizations to volunteers

•    Provide trackable data for non-profits and volunteers

•    Make volunteering something more than a 12-letter word

In order to achieve our mission, Volunteer Starkville has created the following plan:

•    Provide a comprehensive listing of local non-profit and community organizations

•    Build a database of willing volunteers.

•    Provide matching technology for volunteers and opportunities

•    Collect, track, and maintain volunteer data through a website

•    Provide private sector buy-in and incentives

To be as successful as we can be, we need the help of the community. We ask local businesses to consider donating an item or gift card to Volunteer Starkville that will be awarded to our “Volunteer of the Month”. The “Volunteer of the Month” will provide an incentive to gain more volunteers, and for those volunteers to donate more hours to the Starkville community.

For each donation, Volunteer Starkville will list that business as a sponsor and post the logo and website of the business on our page, www.volunteerstarkville.org. This website is the main avenue of communication between organizations and volunteers.

Please consider donating to this organization that will better the city in which we live. For more information about our organization, visit www.volunteerstarkville.org or contact Jackie Hudson with your questions at jackie@volunteerstarkville.org. Thank you and we look forward to making Starkville a community of volunteers, with your help.

We are also hoping that all non-profits and organizations in Starkville will register with Volunteer Starkville. Registration is free and will not only give volunteers a wide selection of opportunities, but will also allow your organization to been considered by everyone who visits the website. For more information on registering contact Nick DiColandrea at nick@volunteerstarkville.org.

Sincerely,

Jackie Hudson

SYP Social – April 13th, Starkville Country Club

The April SYP Social will be held on the 13th, 5pm – 7pm at the Starkville Country Club, 1800 South Montgomery Street and will feature a Community/Customer Appreciation Event sponsored by Mitchell Distributing.

Anheuser-Busch Brewmaster George Reisch will be on hand for a beer tasting (see his bio attached below.) Free food and beverages will be provided. All are welcome, even if you don’t care to taste the beer. This will be a great chance to check out the Starkville County Club and to network with other young professionals.

Mitchell Distributing has set up a Beer Tasting Facebook Event with more details.

George F. Reisch, Anheuser-Busch Brewmaster

George F. Reisch, a fifth generation brewmaster by trade, is a Brewmaster at Anheuser-Busch, Inc and is the Director of Brewmaster Outreach for Anheuser-Busch.

With his family brewery, Reisch Brewing Co., of Springfield, Ill. in operation from 1849 to 1966, Reisch fell in love with the art and skill of brewing at an early age.  Always an avid home brewer, Reisch attended the University of Wisconsin to gain his Bachelor of Science in Food Chemistry while working at Joseph Schlitz Brewing Co., as a brewery worker, and at Miller Brewing Co. as research assistant during the summer months.

Upon graduation in 1979, Reisch was placed in the Anheuser-Busch Corporate Management Training Program before being promoted to Brewing Supervisor at the company’s Los Angeles Brewery in 1980.  There, Reisch also held Brewing Technical Coordinator, Assistant Brewmaster, and Staff Brewmaster positions before being transferred to Corporate Brewing at Anheuser-Busch headquarters.

During his tenure at Anheuser-Busch, Reisch has traveled to Mexico, Brazil, and Japan on a variety of brewing-related projects and has also assisted with “New Beer Brand” development.  He has also hosted hundreds of “Brewmaster Dinners” in the United States and has taught hundreds of brewing schools.  Most recently, Reisch has overseen Budweiser production at the five Budweiser-producing breweries located throughout Canada.

Reisch serves as President of the Master Brewers Association of the Americas (MBAA).  He is a tasting judge at both the World Beer Cup and Great American Beer Festival.

He also serves as a member of the Board of Advisors for the North American Brewers Association (NABA).  Reisch was named “Large Company Brewmaster of the Year” at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver in 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2003.

Reisch has appeared on several TV and radio programs.  He and his wife Kathy have four grown children and reside in Wildwood, Missouri.

SYP and LinkedIn.com

LinkedIn.com is an online resource to help you manage your professional network. Why do you need to join yet another social network site? Linkedin helps you discover the professional experience and expertise of those in you extended network and to send requests for advice, services, jobs, and anything else you can think of. Here is a simple video from their site to explain:

Every month, new young professionals are moving to Starkville and attending the SYP Socials. As our group grows it becomes more and more difficult to meet everyone in the room. I still don’t know what most of you do, and I would like the chance to tell more of you what I do. Imagine if you could just write out all that stuff on your name tag? Well, that is what Linkedin is all about.

Here is the link to my profile to get you started: http://www.linkedin.com/in/troyderego

You will notice in my list of groups that a SYP group has been set up by one of our members. As a member of a “group” you can join discussions, post news items, and use the jobs board. There are many groups available to fit your specific interests and associations.

Please check it out when you get a chance, and help build the Starkville Young Professionals into a strong professional network.

March SYP Social – Ptolemy’s Taproom

Our next Social is scheduled for Tuesday, March 9th, 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at Ptolemy’s Taproom in the Cotton District (The big purple building). The Beer Cart, provided by Clark Distributing, will be on hand, as well as a sampling of Ptolemy’s grilled paninis.

Your $5 donation at the door will go toward helping Green Starkville provide recycling bins for the the Cotton District Arts Festival and other local events. You or your business, can help further with a sponsorship. Nisreen Cain of Green Starkville will be on hand to answer your questions.

We will have two guest speakers to speak to the group about a couple of programs focused on education. Ron Cossman will tell us about “Corks For Kids,” an entrepreneur program to turn recycled items into products in order to teach kids about business and raise money for schools.

Members of SOAR (Starkville – Oktibbeha Achieving Results) will give us a brief overview of a program to raise money and awareness for guaranteed tuition for students in need. I believe this involves a volunteer opportunity at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally!

One last thing, we have a really fun announcement about the April SYP Social.
Hope to see you all there!

Corks for Kids is looking for a few young professionals who would like to take a leadership role

Corks for Kids is a community-based program in which wine corks are collected from area restaurants, crafted into branded art products and sold over the Internet and in area retail stores. The profits are used to fund art programs in the Starkville school system. High school students run the operation in an entrepreneurial class that is directed by the Small Business Administration at MSU as a means to develop future business leaders. The business operation is overseen by a business advisory group. Elementary, junior high and senior high students may suggest cork-art ideas. There are also opportunities for internships by marketing students in MSU’s college of business.
